Why are moisture problems increasing? Condensation - Black Mould or Mildew growing - Musty Smells - Structural defects - Damp furniture - Peeling wallpaper

Before the 1970’s, energy prices were much lower and heat efficiency was not as important as it is today. Most homes had single glazing (moisture could condense on the windows), coal fires had an open chimney and there was very little draft proofing (gave excess moisture natural ways to escape) The modern home is very different, with well fitted doors and windows, double glazing, loft and cavity wall insulation, no open chimneys and fewer drafts. That means there are now virtually no natural escape routes for excess moisture. What’s more, we’re also generating more moisture than ever by showering more frequently and by using automatic washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and cookers. Having a decent dehumidifier and leaving internal doors slightly ajar does make a real difference Once you have owned one you won't want to be without it |
